Arm and Hammer Essentials and Purex Natural Elements

Once again I'm blogging about products but I have to say, I've been using both of these detergents and have really liked them. I guess the folks at Arm and Hammer finally listened to all of the moms who complained about the overpowering smell because the bottle I picked up last night at the store was dye and fragrance free. We're almost at the end of our bottle of Purex Natural Elements. I just contacted Dial Corp. about whether or not the detergent is made with petroleum products or brighteners. Will update on their response.

Does this only come in liquid form, and in a plastic bottle? I used to use liquid detergents but now I just use powdered Arm and Hammer because I can recycle the box.

That's a good question. I think that for now it only comes in liquid form in a plastic bottle. The bottle is type 2 plastic which is recyclable in most places, but small comfort if you are making that extra effort to live sustainably. I did have a dream last night where they made a powder version of the Essentials and it worked even better than the liquid, if that helps (and I am totally not making that up).

Ideally, you would want your supermarket chain to carry big, 50-gallon drums of naturally-derived liquid detergent so you could use your own container and they would sell it by the ounce.

Just an FYI, cheap store bought powder detergents that say they are biodegradable with anionic and nonionic are not as good for the environment as we like to think. These surfactants are slow to degrade and are potentially toxic to humans since surfactants are synthetically produced. FDA does not have to regulate cosmetics or household cleaners like they do food, so it is up to the consumer to do his/her own homework before buying a potentially hazardous product.

In response to anon., it is important to do your own homework and not to rely solely on the advice of blogs for your information. I am so glad I emailed the Dial Corporation about Purex Natural Elements because I would have just assumed they used no petroleum in their product like Arm & Hammer Essentials states on their bottle.

It is important to find out exactly which ingredients make the least impact on the environment when you use them. I will blog more about this because this is an important topic as we get to a point where our water supplies become perilous because of contaminates.

Hi...your blog is interesting and very informative, thanks :)

I have been researching natural cleaners and detergents for my own personal use. Two brands that you might want to try, both of which clearly display their ingredients and are free of harsh chemicals, they are: Sun & Earth, and Seventh Generation. I believe also that each has scented and unscented versions of their products.

Just a thought!

Thanks and continue with the good blogging!

Hm...didn't realize there were petroleum products in Natural Elements. From the ingredient list and press materials I received, I believe the surfactants are based on palm and coconuts...

Well, if you're interested in another perspective, I just reviewed the product over on my site -

Hope you'll come take a look!
