And this is the result: Clothes dumping - this is going to become a hygenic disaster if thrift outlets don’t take action - for crying out loud, some of the larger operations (looking at you, Goodwill) could set out a dumpster for people to dump their stupid clothes for the time being.

Mistressmybaehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16040035582367431567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31651375.post-23357285738133764302020-05-12T10:32:00.001-04:002020-05-12T10:32:44.523-04:00Stasher Bag

See, this is why I will never be a successful Internet Influencer for environmental products - the new wonderful “Pure Platinum Silicone” Stasher bag, ostensibly to be used for storing and cooking food; I am using it for my herbal smoke pouch. Got this at CVS for 10 dollars, and they had two larger sizes that were more expensive. I thought it was a bit prohibitive price-wise, but check it out: this bag is an accidentally environmental product to play with and consider adding to your kitchen storage options. You can boil in this pouch, put it in the dang oven for pete’s sake, microwave it or use it as storage in the fridge or freezer. And it’s dishwasher safe. As long as you are careful to not puncture it, these pouches would be a super way to cut down on packaging. Link to the website.

Mistressmybaehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16040035582367431567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31651375.post-68931176555578382962020-04-19T08:32:00.001-04:002020-04-19T08:32:22.235-04:00Composting article

I’ve edited it because, even at that time - this was probably in 2016 maybe? - I was still not taking ownership of my own crash and burn at this position. I’m finally, finally coming out of this hopelessness I’ve felt for years after quitting - hopelessness in not believing I could learn from this and do better next time; in my mind, there was no ‘next time’ for me because I had lost the courage to persevere. I’m still struggling but, for some reason, since the Covid-19 quarantine went into effect I’ve been more optimistic about my future prospects:

Here in my little eco-bubble ("Alachua County: a blue dot in a big, red sea), things are pretty nice (trying not to use "chill"), however; three years since my nervous breakdown I am feeling stronger and (hopefully) wiser, attaining a deeper understanding of how things went all to hell.

I own my part in the demise of my library career, and as for how I was treated by people I had worked with for 10 years, I forgive all of them. There is no reason to hold onto anger or the notion of revenge, no matter how insignificant. It's the nature of the beast in a high-stress, high-profile position (yes, believe it or not, I had discovered the most stressful library job [which, to many in and out of the profession, will recognize that this is a contradiction in terms]). I am reminded of the phrase, "Forgive but never forget," and there's evidence that not forgiving is okay (I know because someone on the Internet said it).

I'm moving a lot more slowly these days - some of this is from finally realizing how crazy my life was at the library, and taking time now for home and hearth. I'm glad to be home more right now; I'm 51 years old and, frankly, I'm kind of semi-retired at this point. I work part-time at a survey center (more and more I realize how many times surveys have intersected with my life, and so maybe there's something to that). Also, I messed up my right leg and am hobbling around in a boot.

Having crawled out of the trainwreck that was my life and career, I'm back to square one in a sense. I am leaning more towards trying to get back into school and finishing my masters degree in library science. I really, really, miss working in a library and understand that even while librarianship is my path, my fervor is tempered by the new awareness of my ability to juggle many tasks does not mean I should juggle at all. Physical evidence is knowing that slowing down has improved my health.Mistressmybaehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16040035582367431567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31651375.post-47490819286118596332020-04-17T13:58:00.000-04:002020-04-17T13:58:40.628-04:00Unsalted Butter for bakingI know there are probably a kajillion cooking sites and channels that tell people to use unsalted butter in baking to reduce the overall amount of sodium. I know this, okay?! Can’t I just make the observation - okay, two observations - about butter?

The first is, if you do use salted butter in a recipe that calls for salt, just omit the salt because the butter already has 90g of sodium per tablespoon for goodness sake, so why would you add more salt on top of that?

Is that too naive or facil? I thought it was rather astute as I used my last stick of salted butter to make cookies today.

The other observation about butter is that Land O’ Lakes brand finally stopped using the Indian maiden on its packaging. I’m not going to call it iconic, the image has always been an affront to indigenous peoples, and its about time they stopped using a charicature of an American
Indian.

At least they didn’t promote this little bit of cringe from the 70’s:
It has occurred to me intermittently that there is going to be a f*k-ton of donations being made when some of the restrictions for the coronavirus are lifted to allow donations to thrift store and consignment shops once again. I am both gladdened and nervous about this; as I write, people are going through long-forgotten boxes, closets, sheds - it boggles the mind how much crap - and therefore treasure - people will be unleashing into the reuse stream after we go back to “normal” or some simulacrum.

I’m doing this along with everyone else - my albatross possessions are a blurry mix of my childhood, my son’s childhood, and the constant inflow and stoppage of everyday detritus we bring onto the property. My usual strategy is to create a bolus of things to go to Hospice Attic and when it reaches a certain enormity I take it to the donation area. You’d think that system would make my house a spartan landscape but you would be wrong. Like I said, I am literally shoveling out crap from my son’s childhood.

I have ultimately failed as an environmentalist by buying my child every Nerf gun in existence and then letting them rot out in the carport. And that’s just the name-brand plastic! My task the past month has been to go through and fill contruction-sized bags of plastic debris - it’s mostly broken Nerf guns but there’s also things like LEGOs that can be legitimately returned to the use stream. Mostly, though, it’s junk that is headed to the landfill and did I say it was mostly plastic?
Been thinking about the enormous misery Americans are going through right now. Despite your belief in the validity of the pandemic, we are still in a spiral - emotionally, physically, environmentally - and the coronavirus or COVID-19 is going to be with us even after the number of new cases diminish.

Now is the time to have that heart to heart you’ve been wanting to have with yourself but can never seem to find the right moment to bring up the topic of how will life change after the pandemic is over. Today, Bette Miller on Twitter quoted Arundhati Roy who is telling us that we are going to have to rethink what normal is for most Americans. The sudden halt to commerce, travel, immigration, public spaces - all this is going to have to be rethought moving forward. It’s a disaster but people are waking up to some hard truths about American society that we’ve obfuscated for generations, and have dismantled over time, like the concept of equality for all. People who had steady employment are now laid off like they don’t exist - this many people out of work is unsustainable. We will implode if this continues.

In other news, there’s going to be a huge food giveaway tomorrow morning at the Alachua County Fairgrounds and I volunteered to help with the distribution. I was advised to bring a mask but not gloves because the CDC hasn’t recommended it, which is a ridiculous reason for not letting people bring gloves.Mistressmybaehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16040035582367431567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31651375.post-3482677535647528872020-04-01T12:22:00.000-04:002020-04-01T12:22:06.661-04:00In the time of Coronavirus

WTH, people?! I go away for a few years and now the worst has occurred- coronavirus, Covid-19. Through a hilarious series of mishaps and literal fumbles, our dear leaders let several windows of opportunity close and now we’re all apparently doomed.

How’re things going? Social distancing is hard, even for an introvert (I’m not talking about myself, per se)! But in all the humanity-related miseries we wake up to each day, there is a silver lining; humanity’s breather from destroying the earth has shown us just how resilient the earth is, actually.

We used to see stories about how, now that Chernobyl is uninhabited by humanity, the natural ecosystem is flourishing and thriving like never before. Now, with the reductions of thuggish humans along the canals of Venice, the water is a beautiful, clear, Mediterranean blue from lack of boating activity. That’s just one of the many stories and I’ll update at some point with more links (if you’re into that positivity thing).

From this article on the NatGeo site, it says there are now “animals thriving among human quarantine” spate of fake news stories. But then Snopes pops off with “it’s a mixed bag of truth and BS.” Who are we to believe?!Mistressmybaehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16040035582367431567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31651375.post-71651231617524780192016-02-13T13:01:00.001-05:002016-02-13T13:01:27.651-05:00Chico Bags Bag Monster Costume VideoMistressmybaehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16040035582367431567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31651375.post-87457284198748701732016-02-13T12:54:00.000-05:002016-02-13T12:54:17.017-05:00Valentine's Day is for LOSERS

Happy Feast of Aphrodite and harambe! (No, harambe isn't a holiday, it's Disney-speak for "Welcome!"). (That is wrong; Harambee means "Let's work together" in Swahili).

Oh my gosh... it's been so long since I've posted. So long, in fact, that when I saw the number of followers it had increased, like, 30%.

I'm unemployed right now, which is pretty much the only reason I have time to blog. I'm also mixed up in other shenanigans which I won't get into, here -- but besides looking for a new job I've injected my presence in a couple of different directions; one of them this weekend is the Cinema Verde International Environmental Film and Arts Festival, taking place at the Hippodrome State Theater and other locations in town (here is a link to the movies, times, and locations) this weekend. I was not really a volunteer, although I got to hang out with the director who is really cool and did a couple of canvasses and promotions, one of them using a plastic bag monster suit made by Chico Bags. It was heavy and hot! Thank goodness it was kind of chilly at the time. It makes a very striking statement when you enter a biergarten and proclaim that the outfit you are wearing consists of the number of plastic bags the average human consumes each year.

I'll have the video in a bit and will upload (the bag monster was one of Cinema Verde's intrepid and courageous volunteers).

More stuff to talk about but I need a laundry break (one of the many household tasks that have gotten out of hand during the last three years).
Or, why I've been absentI've been neglectful of my least-neglected blog, but that's about to change; I lost my job after three years and I'm back on the market. Probably not for long, but in the meanwhile I'll start the blog(s) back up. In the interim I've gotten a studio where I can work on sewing, environmental outreach, and podcasting. A trifecta of goodness! I'll post more about what I've been doing (or not doing) for the environment. Seè you soon! Remember, I'm also on Facebook so please like the page!Mistressmybaehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16040035582367431567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31651375.post-26164101706067935912014-07-20T11:05:00.002-04:002014-07-20T11:07:53.910-04:00USA Shoemaking

The Wall Street Journal had an article in their Marketplace section on Monday (July 14) about how shoemaking is getting a "foothold" in the US (get it?). There might be a paywall and therefore a dead link, but the gist of it is that Merchant House International, who was part of the movement to offshore the US industry to Asian countries, is starting to shift some of its manufacturing back to the states. Shoe manufacturing in the US accounts for about 2% of a 1.7 billion dollar market. Why move back to the US? A demoralized workforce ready to accept lower wages? More right to work states ready to give manufacturers a huge break shouldered by American workers? A little bit of this and many more reasons? I'm skeptical that this shift benefits Americans even at the same time that I'm glad some shoe manufacturing is being re-developed - maybe Converse will come back and I can buy a new pair of Chucks and not feel like a traitor.

More than this, though, I feel like we should probably shift our focus towards technology manufacturing - don't get me wrong, Americans still need shoes, but we could be targeting manufacturing concerns that require skilled American workers who have a chance of elevating themselves to the middle class because the pay is better.

And, more than even this, I need more coffee.Mistressmybaehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16040035582367431567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31651375.post-19904572289141121332014-07-08T12:46:00.001-04:002014-07-08T12:46:11.482-04:00Update on Venus swim braI just got a reply on an old post I did about the Venus swim bra http://theaccidentalenvironmentalist.blogspot.com/2011/08/venus-swim-bra-review.html?m=1

The commenter said the bras are actually made in Germany and India and they resell used items as new. I plan on following up on this claim, but first I wanted to update on the bra itself.

When I first tried it on, it seemed way too small for a DD size, but in the year or so since purchasing the bra I've lost some weight. It now kind of fits ( I have the sizing problem where one breast is larger than the other) and I'm able to wear it without a cover-up. Before, I would wear it for support but always underneath a swim shirt; now I can wear it by itself and not feel like I'm going to spill out all over the place.

I still think Venus sizes them too small, though, and a DD is really D, if not a large C. I will also update when I find out more about this claim that Venus does not actually manufacture their bras in the United States, slo stay tuned.
Mistressmybaehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16040035582367431567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31651375.post-10016621552524819282014-06-01T11:44:00.001-04:002014-06-01T11:44:50.814-04:00Give me the T-shirt!!!

So, this is the response from Sustainable UF:

Hi Michele,

Yes! I am such a sucker for a free t-shirt! Especially one from Sustainabilty@UF because they like to use American Apparel for some of their giveaways and I love me a soft, cotton, AA t-shirt.
It's University of Florida Earth Day and, hey, here's University of Florida president, Bernie Machen, talking about sustainability (sorry he looks so small in the picture), and some other pictures of stuff I saw on the Plaza of Americas today on my way into work. Also, the Sustainability Hut was there but didn't have time to take their quiz to get a punchcard towards a t-shirt.

I even U-Streamed the event, in my effort to learn how to liveblog on U-stream, I updated Facebook with the update, but there were no viewers. I have to start an aggressive campaign to get people to subscribe to the UF U-Stream channel (it doesn't exist, yet, but I'm going to start one).

As I was leaving, they were giving out an award to President Machen and his missus, as well as Sustainable UF coffee mugs stuffed with a rolled-up t-shirt to give to other helpers of the campus environment. I want a coffee mug and a t-shirt, dammit! I help the environment! Whatever!
The terrarium necklaces were the cutest! They were little disposable plastic sauce containers strung through with colorful cotton string, containing a blog of wet soil that you could add small lichen and what-not to the thing. One of the people who had organized the table had his terrarium necklace for over 3 weeks. Pretty cool idea - it would be great for older kids, I think.
Hello out there - i've been a bad blogger, and my apologies for not updating AE. But, I have good news! I'm going to be celebrating Earth Day 2014 with dear friends in, of all places, Nashville, TN. The celebration takes place at Centennial Park, site of the Parthenon (which I've been to!), and I'm looking forward to seeing lots of hippies and eco-freaks. I think I'm going to try live blogging the thing while I'm there - posting more often and uploading videos. Maybe I can connect with whatever social media stuff is happening there and help with on-the-ground reporting!Mistressmybaehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16040035582367431567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31651375.post-27485957305952572132014-04-02T09:53:00.001-04:002014-04-02T09:53:01.463-04:00Maidenform has a lot of nerveAll manufacturers who claim to design their clothes stateside or, like in the case of Lacoste, in France, should be ashamed of themselves - while there is nothing wrong with coming up with inventive designs for clothing, there is everything wrong with not actually producing the items in the same country.

I had this revelation while looking through a new box of bras from Maidenform, a bitter sweet activity because, while I like their bras and underwear, I don't like the fact that they moved their manufacturing concerns overseas.

That's why this photo is so enraging and ludicrous.
